Questions and answers
Is Songscape really free?
Yes. No ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no account.
How accurate is it?
Songscape uses the BirdNET+ model, one of the most widely used bird-sound classifiers in research. Accuracy is best with a clear recording of one singing bird. Like any AI it can be wrong, so double-check rare or unexpected species before you report them.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Identification, species info and photos are all on your phone. Internet is only used for optional extras you switch on yourself: map tiles, weather and place names.
Which birds can it recognise?
9,789 species worldwide. Songscape uses your location and the time of year to favour birds that are actually likely where you are. You can also pick a location by hand or turn the filter off.
Do I need to give it my location?
No. Location is optional and only used on your phone to filter species and tag your own sessions. Without it you can still identify birds.
How do I get the best results?
Hold your phone still, point the bottom microphone toward the song, and stay quiet for a few seconds. Wind and traffic make it harder, so step out of the wind if you can.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not yet. Songscape is on Android today. Email us if you'd like to hear when iOS is ready.
Where can I learn every feature?
The user guide covers Live Mode, Explore, surveys, file analysis, exports and every setting.
