Getting your free Gemini key

In the app, open Settings › Gemini API key and tap Get a free key, or go to aistudio.google.com/apikey.
Sign in with any Google account and click Create API key.
Copy the key, go back to Sayfarer, paste it and tap Save & test. You should see "Your key works".

The key stays on your phone. If Google reports a limit, wait a minute or create a second key. If you see "Google rejected this key", the copy was incomplete: paste it again.

Offline use

Open Settings › Offline language packs and download the languages of your trip while you are on Wi-Fi (about 30 MB each). The phrasebook, saved phrases, flashcards, country essentials and SOS cards work with no connection. AI voices, photo translation and country guides need internet.

Offline speech recognition uses your phone's own engine. If a language is missing, install it under Android Settings › System › Languages › Speech › Offline speech recognition (wording varies by phone).

Voices

Phone voices are free and offline; AI voices are more natural and need internet. If a phone voice is missing or robotic, install voice data under Android Settings › System › Languages › Text-to-speech output › Speech Services by Google › Install voice data, then tap "Check again" in Settings › Voices.

Troubleshooting

The mic button does nothing. Allow the microphone permission: Android Settings › Apps › Sayfarer › Permissions › Microphone.
"No connection" but I am online. Some networks block Google AI endpoints (hotel and airport Wi-Fi, some VPNs). Try mobile data.
Wrong language detected. Tap the language badge on the result and pick the right one, or pin the spoken language in the language bar.
Nothing is spoken out loud. Check that hearing-impaired mode is off (Settings › Voice & speech) and the phone is not on silent.
Translations disappeared. "Save history automatically" may be off, or history was cleared. Starred phrases are never removed by Clear history.

Open an issue on GitHub or email us. Please describe what you did, what you expected and what happened, and mention your phone and Android version.

Accessibility statement

Sayfarer aims to meet WCAG 2.2 AA where it applies to native apps: every control has a label for screen readers, text scales to 160%, colour contrast meets 4.5:1 in both themes with a high-contrast option, animation respects the system "remove animations" setting, and there is a hearing-impaired mode, a dyslexia-friendly font and a one-handed layout. If something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it.

Delete your data

Everything Sayfarer stores lives on your phone. Clear it in Settings › Data or uninstall the app. See the privacy policy.
